Restart Party

We are hosting a Restart Party at St George’s Church on Sunday 10 October, from 12 noon till 3pm - and you are warmly invited to get involved!

It is an event “where people teach each other how to repair their broken and slow devices – from tablets to toasters, from iPhones to headphones.

E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams across the world. We know the pace of our consumption has real social and environmental costs. And we know people are frustrated with the throwaway culture around them. But we can do something about it. There are people in your community who already know how to fix these things – and other people who want to learn. By bringing them together in a Restart Party, you can have an immediate impact on e-waste in your area, as well as helping in the fight for more sustainable products in the long term.

We can’t just wait for greener, more ethical products to appear. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!” (The Restart Project).

Come with your electric or electronic devices that need fixing and see if we can sort them out in a true community spirit. You can watch and participate in disassembly, diagnosis and a possible fixing of your items, learning to be a restarter yourself.

If you are knowledgeable in electrics and electronics repairs and would like to volunteer your time and skill to our repair cafe event, please let us know! We could also expand the event to include clothes or other forms of mending. (You can email office@stgeorgestufnellpark.org).

Some refreshments and snacks will be available whilst waiting for your turn.

New arrivals accepted until 2pm, to give everyone time to fix and clear.

Restart Party Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

Check if your device is still within warranty, you may be eligible for a free repair, replacement or a refund. (Which? helps in the UK).

Take responsibility for your device and your data. Our volunteers are here to help you learn to fix your gadget, not to provide a free repair service. Get involved!

Backup your data. We can’t be responsible for your cat pics, so please back up your device before you come. (Of course you already do this once a month, right?)

Charge up your device and bring all leads.

Get in touch with organisers if you have any questions about whether a fix is possible.

Don’t:

Assume repairs will be successful. We help fix over half of devices at our events. Even if your repair is unsuccessful, you will learn about your device and why it failed.

Expect us to have spare parts. But we can help you source them. Often people visit twice: first we’ll help diagnose the fault, then you source the spare part, and on your return we’ll help you do a replacement.

Attempt a mobile screen repair just to save money. DIY mobile screen repair is a learning opportunity first and foremost. Please see our advice page first.

Bring a microwave.
